What the MP3 contains

The audio track of the video exactly as it plays — including any background music, the creator's voice, and any sound effects. It is the video's audio, not a separate studio version of the track.

Length matches the video. A 15-second clip gives you a 15-second MP3, not the full three-minute song that happened to be used in it.

Where the copyright line is

The soundtrack of a TikTok video is often someone else's copyrighted music. Taking the audio for personal listening is one thing; re-uploading it, or using it in your own video, can be a copyright problem — especially on a monetised channel, where the rights holder can claim it automatically.

Trending sounds in TikTok are licensed for use inside TikTok. That licence does not travel with the file when you download it.

What to do with the file

• Ringtone or notification sound — on iPhone, trim it to under 30 seconds and use GarageBand to make a ringtone; on Android, most file managers can set an MP3 as a ringtone directly.

MP3 vs M4A, and does quality suffer?
