Downloading From a TikTok Short Link (vt.tiktok.com)

Tap Share → Copy link in TikTok and you do not get a video address at all. You get a short code on vt.tiktok.com. That link works here exactly as it is — you do not have to open it first.

What a short link actually is

There are two addresses for the same video, and they do different jobs.

• The short link — https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSxxxxxxx/ or https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSxxxxxxx/. This is a redirector. It holds a short code, nothing else. Its only job is to send you somewhere.
• The canonical link — https://www.tiktok.com/@username/video/7xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. This is the one containing the video ID that actually identifies the post.

You can paste the short link directly

There is a persistent myth that short links have to be opened and expanded before a downloader will accept them. That was true of some old tools. This one follows the redirect on the server side, so the short form is fine to paste in as-is.

Three ways to get the link, and which one to use

• In the app: Share arrow → Copy link. Gives you a vt.tiktok.com address.
• On the website: copy the address bar. Gives you the full @user/video/ID URL — the most robust form.
• From a chat message: long-press the message and copy it. You will get a whole sentence, something like "Check out @someone's video! https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSxxxxxxx/". Paste the entire thing.

Why a short link sometimes will not open

If a vt.tiktok.com link does nothing when tapped, the link is usually fine and something in the middle is mangling it:

• The app opened it inside an in-app browser that blocks the redirect. Use ⋮ → Open in browser.
• A messaging app rewrote it. Some chat clients add tracking parameters or wrap links in their own shortener. Copy the text again, or ask for the long URL.
• The post was deleted or made private. Then the redirect resolves nowhere and no tool can help.
• It is a preview link, not a share link. Links ending in a bare host with no code are not video links at all.

Why the tool needs the video ID at all

The video ID is the only part that is unique to one post. A short code, a username and a caption are all ambiguous — a creator can have thousands of posts and change their handle. Once the server has followed the redirect and holds the ID, it can ask for the clean playback file in one request.

What short links cannot do

• They reveal nothing by themselves. A short code tells you nothing about the creator or the video until it is resolved — which is also why link-preview bots often show a blank card for them.
• They expire less often than people think. A vt.tiktok.com link for a live public video usually keeps working. If it stopped, the post is far more likely to have been deleted than the short link to have died.
• They cannot be guessed. The code is random. You cannot iterate your way to other videos.
