How to Download TikTok Videos on PC or Mac

You do not need the TikTok app, a browser extension or an installer. A browser and the video link are enough — and the file goes straight into your Downloads folder instead of hiding somewhere on a phone.

Why the desktop route is easier

On a phone, saving a video means dealing with share sheets, permission prompts and a camera roll that may or may not index the file. On a computer, a downloaded video is simply a file.

• It is a plain MP4 you own. Rename it, move it, drop it into any editor.
• One predictable location. Everything lands in Downloads — no hidden TikTok folder, no gallery indexing delay.
• No app permissions. A web page cannot ask for your contacts, microphone or storage access.

Step by step (Windows, macOS and Linux are the same)

Three steps, no account:

• Copy the link. Either open the video in a browser tab and copy the address bar, or copy it in the app and send it to yourself.
• Paste it in. Paste into the field at the top of this page. The full share text is fine — the link is pulled out of it automatically.
• Download it. Click the download button. The browser saves the clean MP4 to your Downloads folder.

Where the file actually goes

Do I need a codec pack to play the file?

No. TikTok serves H.264 video with AAC audio, which every modern system plays out of the box: the built-in Movies & TV app or VLC on Windows, QuickTime on macOS, and anything on Linux. If a file refuses to open it is almost always an incomplete download, not a codec problem — re-download it.

Getting the link if you cannot find it

• In the app: tap the Share arrow on the video, then Copy link.
• On tiktok.com: the URL looks like https://www.tiktok.com/@user/video/1234567890 — copy the whole thing.
• Sent to you in a chat: long-press the message and copy it. Pasting the whole sentence works; you do not have to trim the caption off.
• On a phone, but you are at a computer: send yourself the link with any note app or messaging app, then open it here.

What does not work, and why

These are limits of what TikTok exposes publicly, not of the browser you use:

• Private and friends-only posts. There is no publicly reachable file to request, so no tool can fetch one.
• Live streams. A live stream is not a stored file until the creator posts the replay.
• Region-restricted videos. This tool resolves links from servers in the US. If a video is blocked for US viewers it will not resolve, even though it plays fine where you are.
• Photo and slideshow posts. These are image carousels, not videos, and are handled separately — this tool downloads video posts.

Saving a lot of videos

This tool handles one link at a time, on purpose. Bulk scraping violates TikTok's terms and gets IP addresses rate-limited quickly — often taking a working setup down with it. If you are archiving your own content, the more reliable route is to export it from the app you edit in, before uploading.
